Tear Trough

Dermal Filler Treatment

The tear trough is the area between your lower eyelid and cheek. As we age, we can experience volume loss in this area which can cause dark circles and hollows under the eyes. Often patients will complain that they look tired and the hollows make them look drawn.

The tear trough can be filled with dermal filler to disguise the hollows, the results are instant and can rejuvenate the entire face. This is an advanced procedure requiring skill and experience. ο»Ώ

  • How is this achieved?

A thorough consultation is carried out by Dr Sandy and the delicate eye area is assessed alongside the rest of your features to figure out where the filler should be strategically placed. Dermal filler is placed using a needle or cannula (flexible needle) directly under the eye.

There is an instant plumping up which reduces the hollow and subsequent shadowing.  Dr Sandy uses different techniques based on the tear trough deficiency and uses both a cannula and needle for fine tweaks. A cannula reduces the risk of bruising.

  • Is it painful?

The treatment is minimally invasive and well tolerated. Once the injection sites have been cleansed numbing cream is applied to reduce discomfort and the cream has taken effect the injection are delivered in a slow safe manor to minimise any discomfort. The dermal filler also contains anaesthetic so this continues to reduce discomfort as treatment progresses.

  • How soon will I see results?

Results with tear trough are instant, however they get better after a few weeks once the filler has fully integrated. Sometimes there can be mild swelling, redness or bruising and once this has settled the final result can be seen. It is very important to not overfill the undereye area as this can lead to puffiness and an unnatural result. Dr Sandy is always happy to arrange follow ups with patients should they feel they need them.

  • How long does the filler last?

Dermal fillers in the eye area last around 12-18 months depending on a patients lifestyle and metabolism. The filler naturally breaks down overtime and more can be added if needed.

  • Are there side effects?

Once treatment has been carried out Dr Sandy will go through the aftercare and there is occasional risk of redness, bruising and swelling due to the face having many blood vessels.  There is very rare risk of blocking vessels and this will be discussed in detail at your appointment.
