Upper Lip Filler Treatment

Upper lip lines/smokers lines

Upper lip lines sometimes known as barcode lines or smokers lines can be ageing and can make an individual look sad or cross. The area here is very delicate and the skin is quite thin so prone to ageing and sometimes ages faster than other areas on the face. many ladies complain of their lipstick bleeding into the lines.

This area needs to be treated very sympathetically as it important to keep the area looking natural and not filled. Often a very thin gel called hyaluronic acid (dermal filler) can be placed under the skin to lift out the lines and restore a youthful appearance. The upper lip can also have skin boosters placed to help fill out the lines.

  • How is this achieved?

A thorough consultation is carried out by Dr Sandy and the mouth is assessed alongside the rest of your features to figure out where the filler should be strategically placed. Dermal filler is placed using a needle or cannula (flexible needle) sometimes both to get the perfect result.

There is an instant rejuvenating result and often the patient can leave the clinic with very little swelling, or none at all in some instances if a cannula is used as it reduces the risk of swelling and bruising

  • Is it painful?

The treatment is minimally invasive and well tolerated. Once the injection sites have been cleansed, numbing cream is applied to reduce discomfort and once the cream has taken effect the injections are delivered in a slow safe manor to minimise any discomfort.

An option of a dental block is can also be offered to ensure that nothing is felt during the filler treatment.  The dermal filler also contains anaesthetic so this continues to reduce discomfort as treatment progresses. With all injectable treatments the aim is to ensure patients are as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

  • How soon will I see results?

Results with upper lip fillers are instant, however they get better after a few weeks once the filler has fully integrated. Sometimes there can be mild swelling, redness or bruising and once this has settled the final result can be seen.

Once the filler has been placed it takes 2-4 weeks to fully settle. Dr Sandy is always happy to arrange follow ups with patients should they feel they need them.

  • How long does the filler last?

Dermal fillers in the upper lip area last around 12-18 months depending on a patient’s lifestyle and metabolism. The filler naturally breaks down overtime and more can be added if needed.

  • Are there side effects?

Once treatment has been carried out Dr Sandy will go through the aftercare and there is occasional risk of redness, bruising and swelling due to the face having many blood vessels.  There is very rare risk of blocking vessels and this will be discussed in detail at your appointment.
